F-1 Student Visa: Maintaining Status and Exploring Immigration Options

June 2, 2026 · Uncategorized

The F-1 student visa is one of the most common nonimmigrant visas, allowing international students to pursue full-time academic studies in the United States. Maintaining status is essential — lapses can affect future immigration applications.

Maintaining F-1 Status

F-1 students must enroll full-time, attend classes, make normal academic progress, and not work off-campus without authorization. Students must report address changes, program changes, and any other updates to their Designated School Official (DSO).

Work Authorization

F-1 students may qualify for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) while enrolled and Optional Practical Training (OPT) after completing their program. STEM graduates may be eligible for a 24-month OPT extension. Unauthorized employment — including unpaid work that would normally be paid — can violate F-1 status.

Long-Term Pathways

Many F-1 students transition to H-1B, O-1, or permanent residence through employment-based or family-based petitions. Careful planning early in your academic program can open more options later. Do Law Office helps students navigate status maintenance and long-term immigration strategy.
